Our Library is named Barbier Library in recognition of Euphrasie Barbier, Foundress of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions. Marian School aims to reflect her charisms of Communion – in community, Contemplation – in prayer, Mission – in activity.
It is an inviting area with a wide selection of both fiction and non-fiction books available for borrowing, using our computerised system, by all children, parents and staff in our school. Barbier Library is central to information gathering and love of literature, supplementing classroom programmes with a range of book and non-book resources to assist pupils and teachers across the curriculum.
Staff:
Our full-time Librarian and two assistants ensure the library runs effectively, keeping a high quality selection of literature and hooking children into books and reading. Ever changing displays and liturgical focus add interest and vibrancy. We have many interesting features, including an outdoor courtyard, to encourage reading and other quiet activities. The library team continually strive to keep up to date with recent trends in library resources and ways to display these to entice readers to take advantage of them.
Opening hours:
The library is open from 8:30am to 3pm Monday to Friday. Senior students have
the opportunity to apply as Student Librarians and are timetabled to assist
during
Parents are welcome to join our Library and enjoy the environment, especially
during 8:30–9am and 2:30-3pm.
All classes are timetabled to visit, research and issue books. Y5 & 6 pupil
monitors are rostered to assist junior classes. There are opportunities for
classes and groups of students to book in extra research times. We are delighted
to have Jubilee, the adjoining preschool, visit for story time each week.
Books are issued for 14 days and users are responsible for returning them by
due date, as well as handling the books with care. We reserve the right
to charge replacement costs for lost books or damaged books.
All students are expected to have a library bag.
Resources:
The collection, managed using the Dewey Decimal Classification
System and MUSAC Library Manager, is of a healthy 8500+ size with the
equivalent number of Teaching Resources.
We offer the daily newspaper and the Internet is available for specific topics,
particularly during specially allocated student research times.
Our Cultural Corner is expanding with bilingual books and resources for parents
of children who are English Language Learners.
“Sport of Reading” fun quizzes are planned for certain lunchtimes. Our
Librarian coaches 2 teams of intermediate students to compete in the annual
Literature Quiz
