Fill your bucket with knowledge
This whakatauki is even more relevant to our learning this term. The students have been busy growing their knowledge of our local Heritage. This is in line with the latest update from our national histories curriculum, which has been developed to ensure that all ākonga leave school or kura with an understanding of our histories, and how they have shaped our community.
We’ve had an eventful and disruptive start this week from the weather. As I am writing this newsletter, New Zealand has seen 111,621 lightning strikes in the last week. There were 41 warnings and watches across the country - 18 across the North Island and 23 on the South Island - with chaotic weather across much of the country. Our students at Marian have continued to carry on working as normal amongst the thunder and lightning. Despite the disruptive weather, usual Covid and winter flu absences, including periodic isolation, children remain settled in their routines and learning.
To promote keeping well during winter terms, it is important to check your child comes to school in their school jersey and always has a raincoat for moving around the school. This will ensure that students stay as warm, dry, and healthy.
After School Care
Thank you to all those parents who are contacting After School Care directly if their child is, or is not, attending After School Care. Following the process ensures we have a robust system ensuring the safety of all our students. We are working really hard to ensure the process is followed correctly and every student is accounted for in a timely manner.

Gospel Reflection - Trinity Sunday Matthew 28: 16-20
The words in Sunday’s gospel reading focus on the mystery into which we are baptised. The Trinity is a mystery that we can never fully grasp. The Trinity is what God has chosen to reveal. It is only a glimpse. The reality of the Trinity reveals to us that God is a community of Love. We share the love of God the Father, the goodness of Jesus the Son, and the friendship of the Holy Spirit. To be baptised in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is to be in a relationship with the Trinity.
There are three persons but only one God. The Trinity is a mystery which we cannot really understand, but because we know that God can do anything, we believe in this mystery. It is part of our faith.
Charism Focus
Our Charism focus for this term is LIVE COMMUNITY. This week we are focusing on how we can live our faith openly. We are asked to think about what is fair and unfair in our community, and act toward fairness in our world.
How do we treat others in our class and playground? If we think about what we say, how we say it and what we do when working with friends and classmates we are more likely to act fairly
Jesus is our model. He acted fairly and kindly to others, even those who treated him badly. What do we do when we see someone being treated unfairly by others? Do we walk away or help them?
What does this mean for us at Marian Catholic School?
Using the model that Jesus has given us we need to act with kindness and care for those around us. Treat others as we would like to be treated.
A quote from Matthew’s gospel:
“Do unto others what you would have them do to you.” Matthew 7: 12
Welcome
We warmly welcome into our school community the following children and their families;

Information
Absentees
If your child is going to be absent from school please notify the school office before 9am each day. You can leave a message on the answer phone 856 7515 or send us a message on the School App.
With winter hitting hard we are seeing more children absent from school. Unfortunately we are having large numbers of parents not contacting the school office for absentees. If we do not have a reason for your child being absent then they are recorded as Truant to the Ministry of Education.

Advice for Families with Concerns for Vision, Hearing or Ear Health in Students
Unfortunately the vision & hearing screening team are currently at critical staffing levels due to vacancies and unplanned staff leave. As a result the team have had to review the plans they made for screening for this term. They have had to make the difficult decision to cancel all school visits for term 2 in order to focus on vision & hearing screening for 4 year olds as part of their B4 school checks. This is a decision made based on clinical priority, with a focus on early identification of vision or hearing difficulties before children start school.
Unfortunately this means that the visit to Marian has been cancelled. They apologise for any inconvenience this has caused and will be in contact with the school as soon as soon as they are able to reschedule the visit.
If you have any concerns about the vision or hearing of your child, please read the information below on advice for accessing intervention services.
